My name is Rachel Simmons. I am a pediatric occupational therapist with eleven years of clinical practice. I work with children between six months and five years old, and I consult with two early childhood development programs in my state.

But when parents ask me what to actually do with this, my answer is not what they expect.
Not more toys. Most toys do the work for the child. The lid lifts on its own. The button makes the sound. The shape only fits one way. There is no friction, which means there is no wiring.
What builds this is a task that resists. Something with a zipper that has to be gripped and pulled. A buckle that has to be lined up and pressed until it clicks. A lace that has to be threaded through a hole too small for a mistake.
When a child works a zipper, the brain has to hold a goal in working memory, coordinate both hands, tolerate the friction of the moment before it opens, regulate the impulse to give up, and stay with the task long enough to reach completion.
Each successful completion produces a genuine neurological reward. Not the artificial dopamine spike of a screen that demands nothing from the child, but the earned satisfaction of effort followed by outcome.
